Christmas in Burundi
Dear Team, 17th October 2008
A grubby little orphan in the slum was being teased by another boy, “Hah! You say that God loves you. Well, if that’s the case, why doesn't he look after you? Why doesn't God tell someone to bring you shoes and a warm coat and better food?” The little orphan thought for a moment. Then, with tears starting in his eyes, he replied, “I guess he does tell somebody, but somebody forgets…”
I'm aware that this is very early, but that as we gear up towards the festive season, people are looking at what they can buy their loved ones. As with the last few years, when I'm asked by family what I want for Christmas, I honestly don't want or need anything and ask them instead to put their money towards buying me a cow, as I then get the joy of knowing that each day at our orphanage the kids are drinking fresh milk, which keeps them healthier and therefore saves us medical expenses, and has a lasting effect over a number of years. Plus excess milk can be sold to the local community and generate further income for our product. I LOVE that idea!
As oil prices have sky-rocketed this last year, it has been a serious inconvenience for many of us. But for our brothers and sisters in Burundi, which according to the latest table I saw is currently the poorest country on the planet, those price rises have been a matter of life and death. Many people can barely afford to eat one meal a day. The needs are massive. I am not into guilt trips at all, just gratitude trips. I am soooo grateful for all I have, and I want to share out of my massive wealth with those who have much less than me.
So, what do you want for Christmas? or what do you want to buy loved ones for Christmas?
Here are some options for those like me who have justabout everything they need/want:
A cow for the orphanage for $350/£180
A goat for a poor household for $35/£19
Sponsoring an orphan to study for a year $100/£55
As we aim to finish the building of the medical centre, a door for $65/£30 A bicycle for a community worker for $80/45 quid
A pair of shoes for $20/£9
A gift of whatever sum to go to our work in general
