Orphanage
In 2006, GLO supported the construction of an orphanage in Giteja. Youth for Christ (YfC) was given a plot of land by the Burundian government to build an orphanage to accommodate the many destitute children resulting from the genocide and civil war.
The orphanage encompasses dormitories for adoptive parents and eight children in each.
With its partner, GLO planned to build a self-sustaining community by maximising the land for growing vegetables and an income-generating dairy.
Progress
April 2009:
The medical clinic is nearly finished, which will mean the children at the orphanage and in the surrounding areas will no longer have to travel a long way to get basic medical treatment.
The school building will be finished shortly. The school opened in September 2008, and lessons have been held in one of the houses. They will soon be able to use the school building.
- Five homes completed
- 27 resident children
