Buses

New Generation’s (NG) street-children project reaches out to marginalised children on the streets in Muyinga through a daily programme. It houses 60 children in various families and feeds many hundreds living on the streets.

 

GLO supports the running of two buses which are used to generate income for the day-to-day costs of living and is a valuable resource for outreach work outside Muyinga. The bus takes parties upcountry to minister to local schools and churches.

 

Brian Gimotty, one of GLO’s supporters, is establishing a bus company that will generate profits to provide sustainable income for a home for the street children. 50% of the funding is being provided by the Transformational Business Network and 50% by GLO - $26,250 capital + $5000 working capital.

 

Brian approached GLO in February 2006 proposing to use a combination of equity and debt finance to support entrepreneurial activity in Burundi that would lead to self-sustaining benefits in the region. A joint venture was formed in Burundi between GLO and NG to ensure effective project governance. In May 2007, the first two buses were purchased.

 

The first phase of the project is to see how the initial routes perform and to test project viability before further investment is provided. This second phase of investment is intended to allow the operation to scale to the point where it achieves sufficient profitability to help finance the street children’s home.
