If you are looking for an alternative gift for yourself or a loved one, to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or another special day, then we’d love to suggest these various options for you. So much money is spent on gifts for people (like ourselves) who already have everything they need, and that’s why we’re offering this opportunity to make a very substantial, even life-changing transformation in precious Burundian lives through creative gifts that will keep on ‘giving’ through the coming year and beyond. The donations will be distributed according to our Alternative Gifts Policy.
Rabbits breed… like rabbits! Yes, they multiply fast and are easy to look after. They provide a livelihood to people without tying them down to having to be at home.
Theogene lost both his parents in the war and was found destitute in Ciya, starving and missing school. Igniting Communities for Jesus (ICJ) helped build him and his brother a house and provided him with some rabbits, which have enabled him to continue and now thrive and excel at the local school.
ICJ has been working for several years now with the most marginalised and disempowered widows and orphans of Ciya. As an organisation, it is loved by the population and has huge credibility on delivering what it has promised, including building the community centre and a number of houses for those most needy. Goats are relatively cheap, easy to look after, eat almost anything, produce milk and manure, and reproduce quickly. So they are an easy way to help people in desperate need.
Anicette received a goat two years ago, and that goat has become six goats now! She rejoices in being able to provide for her family, of becoming more respected by her formerly judgmental neighbours, and of having a daily purpose in taking care of the goats.

Be they pastors visiting their parishioners or school children living tens of miles away from the nearest school, solid chunky Chinese bikes last for ages with minimal maintenance needs and enable relationships, business or studies to thrive in ways they simply couldn’t otherwise.
Gervais used to walk/jog (this is hard to believe) 20 miles over 5 hours EVERY DAY to and from school. He was so determined to learn, but obviously it took it’s toll, and he couldn’t do it when he got sick. Now he has a bike to ride there, and he is top of the class! Beautiful!
Help Start A Business
GLO identifies lots of entrepreneurial young talent, and widows needing support, to train and equip them to launch out in business. It might be quite basic like selling at the market or soap-making, but it totally transforms the recipient’s live in terms of quality of living, self-esteem and hope for the future.
Agnes’ abusive husband died and left her destitute with four young children. She received a small loan to start up a market stall in basic commodities, and slowly but surely has built it up such that she can now afford to feed and clothe all her children and get them to school. Her neighbours rejoice at her life turnaround.
RAJEDES works with young people who show potential and dynamism and yet are limited through lack of opportunities. They have a proven track record of equipping and monitoring fruitful business start-ups, so we have confidence in teaming up with them.

Francine was forced to become a prostitute to feed her two children. It was her last resort and she despised herself. Coming across Together for Development, she heard them share a message of hope and a potential new life, and she resolved to give up her night work. A training scheme with TfD enabled her to learn to be a tailor, and her smile tells the story of how happy she is now!
GLO aims to partner with the highest calibre Burundian leaders, and Ephraim at Together for Development is one of them. He is so good at reaching out to ladies in prostitution, and has trained dozens of them for an alternative career in tailoring. However, there simply aren’t enough machines to go around. In some of his projects, six ladies share one machine, which is hugely frustrating and simply not viable.
We want to help more ladies have regular access to their own machine so they can make enough money to take are of their family. £150 would do that. Click here to gift a sewing machine…
Receiving a cow is an unbelievable blessing. These are special cross-bred Friesian cows imported from Tanzania, with a higher daily yield of milk. The recipients are taught how to handle the cow, where to keep it, what to feed it, etc. The impact is they now have a daily income, and have disposable income to send their children to school. It has been a beautiful model of consistently lifting people out of poverty.
Edgar was dirt-poor and struggling to provide for his wife and five children. His whole life was turned around when he received a cow. Now his marriage is stronger because it is less financially strained, the children are not malnourished, and all of them are able to attend school. We have many stories like Edgar’s.
Our partners have been doing this for the last 7 years and has helped about 400 families who are deeply indebted to them and thrilled that they have purpose and hope in their lives.
