It’s wise to write a Will so that your family and dependants are cared for and your wishes carried out.

In the UK, 60% of us put off making a Will and die intestate. Sadly, this means that our estate usually passes to the state and our resources do not go to those we love and care about, just when they are also dealing with bereavement. Writing a Will ensures your wishes will be carried out.

There are different ways you can choose to leave a legacy gift in your Will:

  • Residuary gift (A percentage share of your estate)
  • Pecuniary gift (cash sum)

Yes!

Once you have decided who you would like to remember in your Will, you can choose how to use your estate and assets. It is best to use a professional Will writer to ensure everything is valid and legal.

If you would like to leave a legacy gift to GLO, simply use these details:

  • Our Charity name: Great Lakes Outreach
  • For UK-based Supporters
    • Our registered charity number: 1097267
    • Our address: 1st Floor, Tower House, Latimer Park, Chesham, HP5 1TU
  • For supporters in the USA
    • Our registered 501(c)(3) number: EIN 61-154-2335
    • Our address: PO Box 14465, Charleston SC 29422

If you have already made a Will, you can add a cash (pecuniary) donation by adding a codicil, which is a legal document amending the terms of your Will, or you may choose to rewrite your Will to leave a percentage share of your estate. Speak to a solicitor for more details.

Note: This wording is for UK-based supporters. This is a guideline; we advise you consult with a professional Will writer or solicitor to ensure your wishes are carried out.

Residuary gift (A share of your estate)

To leave a residuary gift, we suggest the wording:

‘I give __ percent of my residuary estate to Great Lakes Outreach (Charity Registration No. 1097267), 1st Floor, Tower House, Latimer Park, Chesham, HP5 1TU, to be applied for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the finance director or appropriate officer shall be a complete discharge to my trustees.’

Pecuniary gift (cash sum)

To leave a pecuniary gift (cash sum), we suggest the wording:

‘I give £___ to Great Lakes Outreach (Charity Registration No. 1097267), 1st Floor, Tower House, Latimer Park, Chesham, HP5 1TU to be applied for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the finance director or appropriate officer shall be a complete discharge to my trustees.’

A gift in your Will can sometimes reduce the amount of tax payable out of your estate, in the UK.

The rate of inheritance tax is reduced from 40% to 36% if you leave at least 10% of your estate to charity.

As we are a UK charity, the gifts that people generously leave us in their Wills are exempt from Inheritance Tax, and may also be exempt from Capital Gains Tax.

Notifying us about your gift will be a huge encouragement to the team, and will allow us to plan for future projects. Furthermore, we would love to thank you and keep you updated on the impact our work is having!

Don’t worry – your information and wishes will be confidential.
