God intervened and gave Andy Hunt an unexpected Detour
Many of you will know that an amazing group of GLO supporters recently took on a gruelling cycling challenge across Burundi. Among them was Andy, whose excitement and training had been building for months. But just hours before flying out, God stepped in, quite literally, to reroute his journey.
Sitting with some of the team at London’s Heathrow airport, Andy happened to glance at his phone and saw an incoming call from a number local to his home. Picking up, he heard the voice of a cardiac consultant from Southampton! “Your ECG is showing something abnormal,” he said. “Your heart rate has dropped to as low as 20 beats per minute, at times even to 12. We need you in the hospital tonight!”

Naturally gutted, Andy wrestled with the news. But after prayer and discussion with the team, he sensed this was no accident. “This is all in God’s plan,” he said. “Different from the broken scapula that prevented me from riding last year, this time I know I need to stay.” (Pic: Andy in Burundi, 2024)
Tests soon confirmed a diagnosis of a heart block, where the upper and lower chambers of the heart aren’t communicating properly. The doctors made it clear: had Andy flown to Burundi, he would have been in serious danger.
Moving on a few weeks, and now with a pacemaker fitted, the talented cardiac team adjusted the device for his active lifestyle. In true Andy fashion, he even asked if he could have controls to speed up while cycling!
What stands out most is Andy’s peace through it all. He’s already had conversations about Jesus with hospital staff and even the Moroccan Muslim taxi driver who picked him up from Heathrow and took him straight to the hospital… so even when he was having the ‘ride for his life’ he wanted to live out his faith! “God really does use everything,” he shared. “I’m excited to see what God has in store.”
Though he was not able to enjoy pedalling through Burundi this time, Andy’s story has already inspired many. And even raised funds too (See Andy’s JustGiving Page Here), reaching 50% of his target without even starting! And what is more, he was the first to sign up for the Tour Du Burundi next year!
We are praying with you, Andy, that you’ll get to really enjoy it at the third attempt! We’ll be cheering you on.
Would you like to join him for this fantastic ride throughout Burundi?
You’ll see some of the most spectacular scenery for sure – but the real blessing is meeting the GLO Partners and the camaraderie of the team as you explore God’s blessing together and raise essential funds for the ministry as you go.
